Tips: Preparing for Your Dance Photoshoot

Your dance photoshoot should be a highlight of your year—fun, inspiring, and full of moments you’ll cherish. But if you’ve never done one before, it can feel a little overwhelming. At Andrew Bowen Studios, my goal is always to create a supportive, memorable experience. With a bit of preparation, your day in the studio can be amazing from start to finish. Here are 5 easy tips to prepare for your dance photoshoot.

Meet Your Photographer & Share Your Vision

Walking into a new studio can feel overwhelming—but getting to know your photographer ahead of time makes everything easier. When you’re familiar with the person behind the camera, you’ll feel more confident and relaxed, letting your artistry shine from the very first frame.

That’s why I always offer a Zoom or in-person meeting before your shoot, so we can talk about your ideas, inspiration, and goals. Share your favorite poses or images—I’ll print them out so we have your vision right at our fingertips during your session.

Pack More Than You Think You’ll Need

The best dance photoshoots leave room for creativity—and that means options. It’s impossible to predict which leotard or skirt will feel just right once you start moving, so don’t limit yourself by packing light.

Feel free to bring a whole suitcase of outfits, props, and accessories. We don’t have to use everything, but we definitely can’t use what you leave at home. And don’t worry: I have an extensive costume closet:

Get Plenty of Rest & Fuel Up

Dance photoshoots are a blast, but they’re also a workout. You’ll repeat poses, jump, turn, and hold shapes longer than you do on stage—all while staying engaged and expressive. You’ll want to be rested, hydrated, and well-fueled so you can give your best.

I always keep snacks and drinks stocked at the studio (some healthier than others!), and there’s a fridge ready if you’d like to bring your own favorites. Let me know what you love, and I’ll try to have it waiting for you.

Bring a Friend or Family Member

Having someone you trust by your side can make your photoshoot even more fun. A friend or family member can help you feel more comfortable, cheer you on, take behind-the-scenes shots, or help toss a skirt for that perfect swirl.

And don’t forget the music—your playlist can set the tone and keep things fun. When you come to the studio, you can take over the speakers and make it your own space.

Just a heads-up: if you’re under 18 or still in high school, a parent or guardian must come with you!

Speak Up!

No one understands your vision, dreams, talents, or strengths better than you do. So during your photoshoot, speak your mind! If you want to try a new pose, have an idea for a prop or background, or aren’t crazy about the lighting, it’s okay to say so.

I welcome your ideas! I encourage you to share what you’re feeling and collaborate freely so you can bring your artistic voice to every image. Because the best photos come from empowered dancers and a photographer who truly values your perspective.

Now You’re Ready for Your Dance Photoshoot

With a bit of preparation and the right photographer by your side, your dance photoshoot can become an experience you’ll never forget—one that leaves you inspired and proud.

My Promise to You

I believe that I have a huge responsibility to every artist who comes to my studio. Working in front of a camera is a vulnerable process; every detail is there to be examined. I promise that I will support you, encourage you, guide you, coach you, laugh with you, and inspire you along your path to creating the photographs that make you proud of your accomplishments, and excited for your future.
