Artistic Photography at Andrew Bowen Studios
From engineering to dance photography
Andrew’s first career began in the all-consuming tech environment designing graphics processors. When his family suffered the loss of their second child due to complications stemming from birth defects, he began to reevaluate his priorities and consider what he wanted his life’s legacy to be.
He decided he wanted to have time for his family while creating an artistic outlet that would enrich the lives of others. Andrew Bowen Photography was born. Today, Andrew is a highly-regarded NC photographer.
Initially, Andrew’s photography focused on families, seniors, and sports, but photographing his first dancer changed everything. The interplay of the dancer’s precision and artistry with that of his creative photography was an aha-moment. It was then that his creative mission became crystal clear. The rest, as they say, is history.
Since then, he studied with world-class dance photographers, taken dance classes, and earned his Master of Photography from Professional Photographers of America (PPA). Gaining a greater appreciation of kinesiology, terminology, and cueing has, in turn, made him a better coach and photographer for his dancers. His experience with sports, portrait, and product photography provided him with more skills and knowledge to sculpt the light to both accentuate the dancers’ form and tell their story.
“There is story-telling in the movement that is deeply personal to each dancer and when coupled with the custom lighting creates a unique variation on a familiar form. We are both on a creative journey, and the photo we create on this day could only be created on this day because of who we are today.”
— Andrew Bowen

About the Studios
Enjoy a short video tour of the expansive outdoor and indoor spaces at Andrew Bowen Studios in Greensboro, NC, Photography Studio and begin to imagine the incredible images we can create together. The possibilities are limitless.
How big is your outdoor space?
The outdoor space covers more than two acres. About half is wooded, and the other half is landscaped. The woods are home to a post barn shack, a swing, small stage, bridge, and some split rail fencing. The landscaped area features a custom ironwork gate, lawns, pine needles, hardscaped paths, and architectural details.
Is the studio in Andrew’s house?
The studio is a separate building. There are two houses on the property. The Bowen family lives in one and transformed the other house into a studio.
How big is the indoor space?
The shoot rooms are just shy of 1000 sq. ft., which does not include the lounge, kitchen, bathroom, storage room of goodies, and changing room. One end of the indoor shoot space is super-airy with big windows and light walls, and the other is darker and moodier
Can I bring a friend to my shoot?
ABSOLUTELY! Friends can be excellent in helping you with wardrobe and hair, throwing some fabric, and being your cheerleader during your day! Friends can get some fun BTS shots while we are working as well.
Pro Tip: NEVER go to a photographer who won’t let you bring a friend.
Do you only work with dancers?
Andrew Bowen Studios focuses on areas that are needed by the dance community: dance photography, creative senior photoshoots, and professional headshots. Andrew loves creating with all sorts of folks who want a fantastic experience and creative environment.
Have you been vaccinated for Covid-19?
Absolutely! He received two rounds of the Pfizer vaccine in February of 2021 and received his third shot in September. Given the current state of things with the Delta Variant, he will be wearing a mask when he’s nearby as an added level of safety for you. He’d appreciate knowing your vaccination status, too.
A Bit More About Andrew & Community Involvement
Andrew grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, bounced around the country, and finally landed for good in Greensboro. He enjoys this city, the friendly vibe, and the distinct character of the towns. Above all, he cherishes the incredible arts and dance community. It was the perfect place for him and his wife to have raised their teen daughter, who is now a young adult in DC. Andrew and his wife of nearly 30 years are enjoying their empty nest years and are looking forward to staying permanently in Greensboro.
Andrew believes the soul of a small business is a commitment to the community it serves. He has tried to use his business to help other organizations’ missions in the Greensboro area.
