Your Creative Partner

Andrew Bowen Studios

The story-telling in the movement is deeply personal to each dancer. By merging our creative talents, we create a variation that is uniquely you. We are both on a creative journey, and the photo we create is a reflection of who we are today.

WELCOME!

I’m Andrew, a photographer focused on the needs of the dance community. I am your partner in creating photographs of your artistry, creativity, and love of your craft.

My studio is built around the idea that exceptional dance photography requires not only specific technical skills but the ability to support and empower artists to be seen as they want to be.

Photography is my second career following a productive and creative career designing graphics processors across two-plus decades. The loss of my son due to complications stemming from birth defects made me take pause, and look at what my work’s legacy would be. Photography was a life-long hobby that became my greatest achievement.

Isn’t a Dance Photography Just Anyone Photographing Dancers?

Not so much…

Like most photographers, I started working with families, seniors, and Bar Mitzvahs and then added sports photography to my repertoire. When I had my first dance senior, the added complexity of getting the dance pose to look great in the camera marked the beginning of a journey the resulted in my dedicating the studio to dance photography.

When that first dancer came to the studio, I thought, “She’s a dancer. This will be the easy part of her senior photography.” Wrong. She was happy with what we created that day, but it sure wasn’t the easiest part of the photoshoot. Getting the angles right, timing the shot with her movement, and trying to coach corrections were far from trivial.

Since that time, I’ve studied with world-class dance photographers, taken some dance classes, and earned my Master of Photography from Professional Photographers of America (PPA). I continue to work at gaining a greater appreciation of kinesiology, terminology, and cueing in order to be a better coach. The more I learned and worked with dancers, the more I came to acknowledge the immense responsibility that I have when working with each and every dancer far beyond that of ‘taking photos’.

STUDIO FAQ

Absolutely! I received two rounds of the Pfizer vaccine in February of 2021 and received my third shot in September. Given the current state of things, I will always wear a mask if that makes you feel more comfortable. I’d appreciate knowing your vaccination status, too.

ABSOLUTELY! Friends can be excellent in helping you with wardrobe and hair, throwing some fabric, and being your cheerleader during your day! Friends can get some fun BTS shots while we are working as well.

Pro Tip: NEVER go to a photographer who won’t let you bring a friend.

YES! Those are the days most dancers have a free day, so I’m here for you!

As a general rule, your photos will be finished in a week. We will pick a favorite image, and I’ll try to have that one ready for you the next day. Prints are sent to the lab after the digitals are delivered. For standard prints, the lab turnaround time is 1-2 days plus another 2-3 days of shipping from Iowa. Albums have a 2-3 week turnaround time and are shipped from NY. Your digitals will be sent to you in a ZIP file, and also loaded into a mini-website that you can anchor on your phone.

The studio is located in a residential neighborhood on a 2+ acre lot. There are two buildings connected by a breezeway. The front house is my private residence and the back building is the studio. The studio is now about 2000 sqft!

A Bit More About Andrew & Community Involvement

I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, bounced around the country during my engineering career, and finally landed for good in Greensboro. I enjoy this city, the friendly vibe, and the distinct character of the surrounding towns. Above all, I cherish the incredible arts and dance community.  It was the perfect place for my wife and me to raise our teen daughter, who is now a young adult in DC. My wife of nearly 30 years and I are enjoying our empty nest years and are looking forward to staying permanently in Greensboro.

The soul of a small business is a commitment to the community it serves. Through Andrew Bowen Studios I am privileged to work with, know, and support many fine organizations :
